WATCH: Joe Root shocks all by turning left-hander against Pakistan, almost survives dismissal
Joe Root turns left-hander
English batter Joe Root left the cricket fraternity in shock when he turned a left-hander during the first Test against Pakistan on Sunday (December 4) at the Rawalpindi stadium. He batted twice as a left-hander during the first two deliveries of Zahid Mahmood in the 23rd over of England’s second innings.
But the first ball was swept directly to the square leg fielder, and in the next delivery, Naseem Shah dropped his catch. Root dismissed the idea of batting as a left-hander.

He played his remaining innings as a right-hander. He was dismissed on 73 (off 69 balls) when he swept the ball straight to Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq’s hands.

Talking about the match, England scored 657 runs in their first innings courtesy of a poor Rawalpindi pitch and four centuries by Zack Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook. Zahid Mahmood scalped four, Naseem Shah picked one, Mohammad Ali grabbed one, and Haris Rauf got one wicket.
Will Jack’s six-wicket haul send the Pakistani batters packing on 579. Pakistan’s three batters smashed tons- Abdullah Shafique (114), Imam-ul-Haq (121), and Babar Azam (136).
England scored 264/7d runs in their second innings owing to Crawley’s 50 off 48, Joe Root’s 73 off 69, and Brook‘s 87 off 65. They declared the innings then. Pakistan are now playing their second innings and right now (when this article is being written), they scored 20 runs so far and need 323 runs.
