On the last day of the second Ashes Test at the Lord’s on Sunday (July 2), when it’s difficult to predict the winner, Australia stirred controversy. England’s Jonny Bairstow was given out by the umpire after wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw the ball at the stumps.
This happened during the 51st over when England were at 193/5 with skipper Ben Stokes and Bairstow at the crease. Cameron Green delivered a bouncer to Bairstow which he avoided and simply wandered out of the crease later. Bairstow might have been thinking it was the end of the over but Carey did not. He aimed for the stumps and the Aussies appealed.
Umpire Marais Erasmus had no choice but to raise his finger. A perplexed Bairstow took a long walk back to the pavilion and boos of “cheat, cheat, cheat” reverberated around the stadium. Though this was controversial, Aussies have broken no rules here as batsmen cannot leave the crease until the ball is declared dead.
Here’s the video:
After Bairstow came Stuart Broad and exchanged a few words with Marnus Labuschagne and other Aussie players. Shortly after that, replays showed that Bairstow was leaving the crease on a regular basis which might have promoted Carrey to make the move by showing his presence of mind.
England still have a chance to win

After choosing to bowl first, England bundled out Australia for 416. But Ben Stokes and Co. failed to reach the target, getting skittled out for just 325.
Australia in the second innings put on 279. Now, England have to chase down 128 after scoring 243 runs for six wickets (at the time of writing this article). Ben Stokes has turned into a beast mode post Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal. Pat Cummins and Co. now needs quick wickets to wrap up the match in their favor.
