India youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to make his Test debut for India in the first Test of the two-match series against West Indies on Wednesday (July 12) in Dominica. India captain Rohit Sharma confirmed the same during the pre-match press conference. Jaiswal will open alongside Rohit.

Shubman Gill who had been Rohit’s opening partner in quite a few matches in recent times, will be pushed to come at number three. Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara used to come to bat at that position but as he has been dropped from the West Indies series, Gill will take his position.

He [Gill] said he can do better for the team at number three. It helps us too as it creates a left-right opening combination,” Rohit said. “We have got that left-hander in Jaiswal and let’s hope that he performs well for the team and he can make that spot his own.”

The 21-year-old Jaiswal had a remarkable Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2023. While in First Class matches, he has scored 1845 runs in 15 matches at an average of 80.21.

India legend Harbhajan Singh pointed out a fact regarding Yashasvi Jaiswal’s and Shubman Gill’s positions in the playing XI against West Indies. Harbhajan wants Gill to open alongside Rohit because of the very fact that Gill has established and proved himself as an opener.

The former off-spinner believes no one should touch Gill’s position as he fits as an opener quite well. He also expressed his hope to see Jaiswal come to bat at number three and scores a lot of runs.

Meanwhile, India with this Test series against West Indies, will also be entering the new 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Rohit Sharma and Co. would like to forget their flop show at the 2023 WTC Final, where they got thumped by Australia by 209 runs.
