Saurav Ganguly and the Lord’s; his partnership runs with Sachin Tendulkar
Saurav Ganguly has a particular history at the Lord’s. He made his Test debut for India in 1996 at the venue and scored a memorable century. In 2002, India, under the captaincy of Ganguly, defeated England in the finals of the Natwest tri-series in the same venue, after chasing a massive 325 runs. That final is also remembered for Ganguly taking off his jersey and waving it in the air.
The duo at least stayed on screen for 30 seconds. Seeing them, cricket commentators Nasser Hussain and Ravi Shastri could not stop talking about them. “21 hundred partnerships in ODI cricket between those two gentlemen- Tendulkar and Ganguly,” said Hussain. And Shastri added, “Yes, great opening pair. Left-hand, right-hand batting combination. 6000 ODI runs between them while opening the batting. Truly great.”
The duo had opened India’s innings 136 times in ODIs and have 6609 runs between them at an average of 49.32 with the highest stand being 258 against Kenya in 2001. They have 21 century partnership between them and 23 fifty-run stand too. If their Test numbers are also added, then the duo’s partnership will be 8227 runs with 26 centuries and 29 fifties. They hold the record of most number of runs in partnerships in international cricket.
