In the semifinal clash, India’s Shafali Verma, at one point, dropped the dangerous Australia opener Beth Mooney’s catch at long-on off Radha Yadav’s bowling. The ball ticked away toward the boundary rope which compounded India’s miseries. Mooney at that time had scored 34 runs and later, she would slam her 17th half-century in the shortest format on Thursday (February 23) at the Newlands stadium in Cape Town.

The 19-year-old Shafali was extremely disappointed and that is why when she got another chance for revenge, she completely lost her cool when she got rid of Beth Mooney at the backward point.

The incident took place in the 12th over when Shikha Pandey’s flat ball made Mooney cut it but it went straight to the hands of Shafali. Right after taking the catch, the U19 Women’s T20 skipper tossed the ball hard on the ground while uttering a few foul words in Hindi to give Mooney a fiery send-off.

That Shafali Verma’s catch did not prove to be much help at all. Aussie skipper Meg Lanning too survived a stumping chance when she had scored just nine runs. She remained unbeaten on 49 off 34 balls and in the process, quickly guided the team to a daunting total of 172/4. India failed to chase the target despite skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s stimulating half-century.

After losing the nailbiting thriller by five runs, India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur accepted her team’s below-par fielding. Indian fielders dropped a couple of catches and leaked a lot of runs. This problem has plagued Women in Blue over the last few years.

We gave those easy catches away,” Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “Got to take those when you want to win. We misfielded. We can only learn from these lessons and not repeat the mistakes.”

While India displayed disappointing fielding, the defending champions did not. With exemplary fielding efforts, Australia eke out a narrow victory. After the win, Player of the Match Ashleigh Gardner, who contributed an excellent 31 runs off 18 balls with the bat and scalped two wickets, believes her team had no right to win at one point. “What we speak about is when our backs are up against the wall, we always try and find a way, and today we probably had no right to win at one point there.

Gardner was talking about the time when Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues were showing nerve of steel. They were cruising toward the target, but the Aussies found a way to rattle the Indians by dismissing the two batters.

Australia will defend their crown on Sunday blockbuster either against South Africa or England. The Indian players will be seen in action in the inaugural Women’s Premier League, which is slated to start on March 4.
