Jos Buttler

The phenomenal English player Jos Buttler has been in his best form throughout the tournament. Smashing four centuries is no joke and he equaled this record along with Virat Kohli. In Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2, the 31-year-old had smashed 89 runs and an unbeaten 60-ball 106 respectively. The Rajasthan Royals star was eyeing for a big knock to set a huge total to Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 29, Sunday.

Buttler played sensibly after reading the wicket well because at the other end, RR kept losing their batsmen. But soon, a great blow hit team when their lone hero Jos Buttler had to leave to crease after his 35-ball 39 runs. It was GT skipper Hardik Pandya to do this best job for his team because as Buttler’s wicket opened up the floodgates for the Titans. Jos Buttler really wanted to make his 863 runs matter by winning the tournament. Probably, he and the entire team wanted to pay tribute to the ‘first royal’, the late Shane Warne who led the team in the inaugural season and won the tournament in 2008. But the dream and heart got shattered as an outside edge made the ball go straight into the gloves of Wriddhiman Saha.

Gujarat Titans’ delight reached heights after sending back the best man while Jos Buttler took a long walk back to the dressing room. He was hugely dissapointed with himself and it was crearly visible on his face. The calm, quiet and soft spoken Jos Buttler didn’t shy away from expressing dissapointment as he covered his face, which was full of emotions, with his helmet and angrily he threw away his helmet and gloves in complete disgust near the RR dugout and headed towards the dressing room.

Jos Buttler scored the second highest runs in a season with his 863 runs from 17 matces, only behind the legendary Virat Kohli who had smashed 973 runs in 2016. He finished as the Orange Cap winner of this season, surpassing David Warner‘s tally of 848 runs in the 2016 edition.

Speaking at the post-match presentation after receiving his Player of the Tournament award, Jos Buttler said:

Exceeded all my expectations apart from today – the trophy we really wanted. Disappointed with that. Big congratulations to Hardik and team. Deserving champions. My goals are to play my role for the team and try and react on the day regarding what the game is asking me to do. In good teams you have a lot of trust in everyone. We have huge trust in everyone in our team. Very grateful for the opportunity to play today.

Disappointed – that’s completely natural. Have lost plenty of finals in my career unfortunately. Today’s been an amazing occasion, been a fantastic tournament. Having had two years without crowds, to come here and play has been an absolute privilege. And for all the young guys in our team to soak it up, and use the hurt from today to push on further for the rest of your career.
