In 2008, BCCI, CA and CSA created the Champions League T20, a tournament for the best T20 teams in the world. The champions from the T20 league from India, Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan and West Indies faced each other in the tournament.
The CLT20 was played for six seasons before being canceled in 2015. Since then no franchise played against teams from other countries, but now there have been talks of reviving the league.
Nick Cummins, the CEO of Cricket Victoria, revealed that the BCCI, ECB and CA were in talks of reviving the CLT20. Attending an event in Mumbai, the cricket administrator said that the boards are still searching for a window to play the tournament. Along with that he admitted that the first edition would probably be played between the women franchises.
Cummins said he is in constant contact with Cricket Australia CEO, Nick Hockley, who agrees it is time to bring back the tournament. He said they would still need to speak to BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, regarding the same as well.
The idea of Mumbai Indians playing Melbourne Stars at the MCG would be just as exciting as India playing Australia at the MCG. No other competition has Indian players. The IPL doesn't have Pakistan players. So there is no competition in the world with the best players. The Champions League would be a way for the best to be playing against each other.Nick Cummins said during an event
History of the Champions League T20
After the success of the inaugural IPL in 2008, the cricket boards of India, England and South Africa joined together to form the Champions League T20. The first season was played in India in the month of December. It had eight teams from India, England, South Africa and Pakistan. Sadly that season was canceled due to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
The first season, which was played in India again, saw 12 teams participating. It also saw teams from New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The first winners of the CL T20 were New South Wales Blues from Australia, who beat Trinidad and Tobago in the finals.
The next five seasons saw Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians win the tournament twice. Sydney Sixers were the only non-IPL team to ever win the tournament. The tournament saw teams from all around the world, including Pakistan as well.
