Everything worked for the Indian girls. With the ball they were economical, they did tight fielding and with the bat, they just needed to save wickets, which they did and now, they are crowned the world champions.

The Women in Blue created history. It’s the teenagers that have made the whole country proud when they demolished England by seven wickets at Senwes Park on Sunday (January 29). For the first time, the Indian women have won a World Cup at any level.

Chasing a mere 69 runs, sure, India did not take their opponents lightly, keeping in mind their semi-final against Australia, where they defended 99 runs by bowling their nemesis out for 96.

Choosing to bowl first, India had a dream start when Titas Sadhu, with the new ball, struck in the first over. Opener Heap top-edged the short-pitch delivery to give an easy return catch to Sadhu. For 15, England lost their second wicket when Archana Devi cleaned Niamh Holland’s stumps. She then got rid of skipper Grace Scrivens in the same over.

Sadhu also got her second scalp when she dismissed Sophia Smale. England scored three more runs when Parshavi Chopra got rid of Charis Pavely, who attempted a slog sweep but got trapped for lbw.

Archana bagged her third wicket by dismissing McDonald Gay who looked dangerous. After her wicket, and quick fall of wickets, England would find themselves in danger because they had to defend 69 runs.

Chasing the target, India lost the first wicket when Alexa Stonehouse sent Shefali Verma packing in the third over. English skipper, Grace Scrivens with the ‘golden arm’ got rid of the big fish, Shweta Sehrawat in the next over. As said before, England couldn’t be taken lightly at all.

Yes that is true, but Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha stayed glued to the crease; they decided not to go for biggies. Slowly and steadily they were driving toward the target. Well, they needed just 19 runs when both the batters started opening their arms, and cheers started in the dressing room. They were ready with the Indian flag to run and celebrate, but then, they had to wait. Stonehouse bowled Trisha out. It was too late for England now.
