Deepak Chahar explains why CSK's team environment is best.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were crowned the IPL 2023 Champions on Monday (29 May) as the MS Dhoni-led team beat defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT). CSK beat GT in a rain-marred game by five wickets to lift their fifth IPL trophy. Once again it was not one player that won CSK the trophy but the entire team. Throughout the course of the tournament, different players stepped up for CSK and won the game.

Not only in this season but for the past sixteen editions, CSK have played with the same template and whoever has been a part of the setup, keeps singing the praise for the franchise. Deepak Chahar is no exception and has been an integral part of CSK now. The pacer is paid a hefty amount (INR 14 CR) to provide his services to the five-time champions.

But it is not the money that motivates the players at CSK, it is the team culture. Time and again players have credited the CSK management for bringing the best out of them. For example, Ajinkya Rahane who redeemed himself in the T20 format said that the backing from the management help him do wonders in IPL 2023.

What sort of backing does CSK management provide?

While players continue to talk about the backing and role clarity in CSK, no one has dived deep into what happens behind the scenes. Nevertheless, Deepak Chahar did shed light on how the CSK team environment is different from other franchises. Chahar said that players are not forced to do things here and everything is optional.

“The atmosphere here (at CSK) is quite different. Everything is optional here. No one forces you to train or practice. They leave it to individuals about what they want to do. If you want to take a rest, no one questions. They just expect you to deliver on the ground. Even if the team loses the game, no one pokes you. There is no pressure here,” said Deepak Chahar on Breakfast with Champions.

“The second reason is Mahi bhai. I have noticed one thing here- when we have team dinners, people sit in groups. The senior players sit at one table while the overseas player will sit at another. The junior players who are new to the setup sit together. Mahi bhai always sits with the juniors,” added Chahar.
