Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has received a notice from the Goa tourism department for giving his villa for homestay without registering it with the regulating authorities. He has also been asked to appear for a personal hearing on the matter on December 8 at 11 am.

According to the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982, it is mandatory to register a homestay with the tourism department. Any failure of such could lead to a fine of up to Rs 1 Lakh. The villa named ‘Casa Singh’ is located in Morjim, North Goa and is allegedly available for booking on online platforms.

“It has come to the notice of the undersigned that your residential premises located at Varchewada, Morjim, Pernem, Goa is allegedly functioning as a homestay and is being marked on online platforms like Airbnb,” said the notice issued by the Deputy Director of Tourism Rajesh Kale.

The notice also asked Yuvraj Singh to justify why the penal action should not be initiated against him for failing to register the homestay with the concerned body. “Every person intending to operate a Hotel/Guest House before operating it, has to apply for registration to the Prescribed Authority in the Prescribed manner. Therefore, a notice is hereby given to you as to why penal action should not be initiated against you for default in registration under the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982,” it said.

Singh needs to provide a response to the notice by December 8 but if he fails to do so, he will be sanctioned with a large sum. “It will be assumed that the grounds mentioned in the notice are correct and on such assumption under Section 22 or in violation of any of the provisions of the Act, you shall be punishable with a fine which may extend up to ₹ one lakh,” notice added.

In June 2019, Yuvraj announced his retirement from international cricket. He was the player of the tournament in both the 2007 and 2011 World Cup wins of India. Ever since his retirement, he has appeared in multiple domestic T20 leagues. Moreover, he regularly uploads posts on his social media handles.
