An old video of Yuvraj Singh has been doing rounds on the internet. In the video, he revealed he wasn’t made the captain in 2007 because he supported Sachin Tendulkar during the Greg Chappell vs Tendulkar fallout. Notably, Chappell wanted Tendulkar to bat down the order for the ODI World Cup in 2007 but the Master Blaster wanted to bat at the top order. India later, was knocked out of the tournament in the first round itself.
Yuvraj claimed that as he supported his former teammate, it irked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and as a result, MS Dhoni emerged as the captain of India. And though Dhoni became the most successful Indian captain, BCCI’s decision surprised everyone because Yuvraj was the vice-captain back then and was expected to become India’s next leader. During an interview with former India player and current commentator Sanjay Manjrekar on Sports18, Yuvraj recalled the Chappell-Tendulkar saga.
I was supposed to be the captain. But when Greg Chappell issue happened, it was either Chappell or Sachin (Tendulkar). I was probably the only player to support my teammate at that point in time. Some of the BCCI officials didn't like that. It was said that they should make anybody captain but not myself.Yuvraj told Sanjay Manjrekar during an interview on Sports18
But Yuvraj also claimed that he doubted the rumors then but right after he lost captaincy, he was removed from vice-captaincy as well. The 2011 World Cup winner asserted that if the same situation occurs again, he would still support his teammate and would have no regrets later.
