It was embarrassing being a Team India fan in many ways.

Team India lost the first T20I against West Indies as the Hardik Pandya-led team failed to chase 150 in their designated 20 overs. India, who were in a commanding position till the most part of the chasse, ended up bottling it by four runs. While this defeat attracted massive criticism, captain Hardik Pandya and coach Rahul Dravid’s lack of awareness also drew flak.

As the Indian team management could not decide on Yuzvendra Chahal’s batting position, it led to them getting embarrassed in front of everyone. The incident took place during the fag end of India’s innings when Kuldeep Yadav was dismissed.

With 10 runs required off the last over, West Indies went with Romario Shepherd who started the over with a wicket. The Windies all-rounder knocked Kuldeep Yadav over and India lost their eighth wicket which mean one of Yuzvendra Chahal and Mukesh Kumar had to come out to bat.

While it was Chahal who came to the crease at first, the Indian team management wanted Kumar to go ahead. Chahal was called back but only to come to the crease again. As Chahal had spent ample time on the field, he could not have been replaced by Kumar but no one in the Indian dressing room seemed to be aware of this simple rule.

Team India make a mockery of themselves

The Yuzvendra Chahal episode perfectly summed up Team India’s outing in the first T20I. The Men in Blue were clueless as it seemed. After restricting the West Indies at 149/6, India managed to keep themselves in the chase till the 15th over. In the last five overs, India required 37 runs with Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson at the crease.

It looked like a walk in the park for two IPL captains, one of which had also led his team to ultimate glory. But it was not to be. Hardik Pandya was cleaned up by Jason Holder on the very first ball of the 16th over. Samson was then run out.

India’s last hope, Axar Patel did throw a few punches but only to be dismissed on the first ball of the 19th over. Arshdeep Singh scored a couple of boundaries to give false hope but eventually, it was a defeat for India against a much below-ranked team.
