The fielding standards in the current edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have risen. This season has already seen some spectacular catches that are vying for the title of best in the world. Rahul Tripathi is the most recent addition to the list, having dismissed Shubman Gill with a stunning one-handed catch during the game between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
It occurred during the third over of the innings, after SRH captain Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bowl first. On the second delivery of the over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a wide half-volley, to which Gill sliced powerfully even though he didn’t want to keep it down.
The ball was moving at a breakneck pace, but it landed in the hands of Rahul Tripathi, who was standing in the short extra cover position. When Shubman Gill slammed it with brilliant timing, it was all written four over the shot, but Rahul Tripathi was on his toes, perfectly timing his jump to the left and plucking the ball with one hand.
It was a spectacular catch, made all the more impressive by the fact that the ball was moving so quickly. The SRH fielders and even the batter were taken aback by the superhuman effort, and the latter was forced to walk away.
Shubman Gill scored 7 runs off 9 balls and was unable to play a match-winning knock for the Titans this time around. Perhaps, given his form this season, one felt that such a special effort was required to get the talented batter out.
