India will be touring Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in July and the 20 man squad for the same has been announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The squad consists of second-string players and will be led by opener Shikhar Dhawan who is the most experienced campaigner on the side.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has shown his happiness after the opener was named as the skipper of the young Indian side. He feels that Shikhar Dhawan has been honored for his contributions to Indian cricket.

Talking to ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar compared Dhawan’s scenario to that of Anil Kumble who was given the captaincy almost after 17 years of international cricket. He added that Dhawan was the most deserving player for the role as he has improved his game with age and has contributed immensely to Indian cricket.

Anil Kumble, Indian cricket’s great leg-spinner, got his captaincy very late and I remember my feelings at that time. I felt that a long-serving Indian player has finally gotten his reward. I am experiencing similar happiness seeing that Shikhar Dhawan has finally got this felicitation to lead India. No one deserves it more, he has been playing for many years, and his white-ball performances have gotten even better with age, especially in T20 cricket. It’s a brilliant selection and I am very happy for Shikhar Dhawan,” said Sanjay Manjrekar.

Shikhar Dhawan made his international debut in 2010 and has represented India in 251 matches across all formats scoring close to 10,000 runs. He has been exceptional for India opening the batting especially in ICC tournaments where he has bagged two golden bats in consecutive Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017.

Dhawan has established himself as a dependable and consistent limited-overs batsman and the captaincy stint for the upcoming white-ball tour to Sri Lanka is a reward for his hard work over 11 years.
