Shubman Gill's bizarre shot

Having been hit on the field while fielding, Shubman Gill was demoted to number three in the second innings of the second Test between India and New Zealand. In his absence, Cheteshwar Pujara opened the innings and did a decent job as he weathered away the new ball during a 107-run stand with Mayank Agarwal.

The duo of Agarwal and Pujara looked very comfortable against the Kiwi bowlers as they scored at will. The visitors on the other hand looked clueless towards the end of the second day. The first session of the third day saw the Kiwis come at the openers filled with intent and new strategy.

The New Zealand pace duo of Kyle Jamieson and Time Southee decided to go short against Mayank and Pujara. And the strategy worked as the Indian batters looked to dodge the rib ticklers. Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara even went on to take a couple of blows on the body as the Kiwis attacked with a barrage of bouncers.

While the strategy was effective against the opening duo, it was not the case as Shubman Gill and later skipper Virat Kohli came to the party. Both batsmen didn’t back down and took on the short deliveries forcing the opposition to rethink their strategy. Brimming with confidence, the batters looked to up the ante as they plotted a counterattack.

It was then that Shubman Gill pulled out an interesting shot from his arsenal as he flat batted a short ball from Tim Southee. Expecting a short one, Gil moved to the leg side giving himself enough room to muscle it away. The budding opener managed to get it past midwicket for a boundary.

The shot left the fans dumbstruck. Twitteratis hailed Shubman Gill for his courageous shot while some went on to challenge the Kiwis to go short against him. Gill and Kohli’s onslaught against the short ball saw the Kiwis go back to their usual line and lengths before heading to spinners to contain the duo.
