Sourav Ganguly birthday: Cricket fraternity showers in wishes as the ‘Prince of Calcutta’ turns 49
Sourav Ganguly
Former India captain and current Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly is celebrating his 49th birthday on July 8, 2021. He is regarded as one of the most successful Indian captains of all time for igniting fire into the blood of the national side.
A legendary skipper
He has been credited for shaping the careers of India’s some of the most successful cricketers including the likes of Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, and Mohammed Kaif to name a few.
The Asian Giants won several popular tournaments under the leadership of ‘Dada’. This includes the 2001 Test series win in Australia, 2002 Natwest Series final victory at the Lord’s, joint-winners at the 2002 Champions Trophy, runners-up position at the 2003 World Cup, successfully drawn Test series against England in 2004 and the 2005 red-ball series win against Pakistan.
He also led the franchises of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Pune Warriors India (PWI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
‘The king of off-side’
Ganguly’s records and accomplishments in international cricket speak volumes about his contribution to the game of cricket. The southpaw had many glorious strokes but his drives were always a treat to watch. Talking about his numbers as a batsman, Ganguly ended his One Day International (ODI) career as India’s second-highest run-scorer, with a tally of 11,163 runs, including 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries.
Coming to his Test numbers, the Kolkata cricketer amassed 7,212 runs with 16 centuries and 35 fifties in as many 113 five-day games.
BCCI’s dynamic President
After retiring from this beautiful sport in 2008, Ganguly has given back to the game on multiple occasions. He started as the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), followed by taking over as the 39th BCCI President without facing any opposition to his candidacy.
However, the legendary cricketer had an eventful last year as the Board President, mostly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
