“Maza aayega dekh” – Suresh Raina reveals MS Dhoni’s reaction after the 2008 IPL auction
MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina revealed in his autobiographical book as to what captain MS Dhoni‘s reaction was after the conclusion of the auction for the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The event ended with CSK getting a stupendous team and captain, immediately making them one of the favourites to win the trophy even before the tournament began.
CSK did have an excellent tournament as they fell only in the final against Rajasthan Royals (RR) who with a young team and a mercurial captain in Shane Warner took the hounours. However, the proof was in the pudding that the Men in Yellow were about to have a period of time where they would dominate the tournament and that was exactly what happened in the initial 5-6 years of the tournament.
In fact, except the 2020 edition and the two years where they were banned, CSK have always made it to the playoffs and along with Mumbai Indians (MI), have been one of the most consistent sides in the entire tournament’s history.
Suresh Raina on MS Dhoni’s reaction after the auction
Suresh Raina’s autobiographical book titled ‘Believe’ released today. It has been authored with journalist Bharat Sundaresan and it traces the cricketer’s journey from a promising player to one of the vital cogs in India’s wheels in the 2010s decade. The book describes several interesting anecdotes in Raina’s life and one such is MS Dhoni’s reaction after the 2008 IPL auction when the CSK team took shape.
Raina wrote, “The IPL auctions happened, and like every other cricketer in the country, I was waiting eagerly to know which team I would be playing for. I was elated to go to the Chennai Super Kings. It meant Mahi Bhai and I would be playing for the same team. I heard from him almost immediately after I was bought in the auction. He said, ‘Maza aayega dekh.’”
“There was a lot of attention on him, of course. And looking at some of the other figures whom Chennai had bought—Matthew Hayden, Muttiah Muralitharan and Stephen Fleming—I was just delighted to be in the same team as them. The IPL strengthened my bond with Mahi Bhai even further,” he added.
Raina and Dhoni are still going strong as they featured together in IPL 2021 where CSK were on a roll till the time the tournament was suspended.
