Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Suresh Raina has welcomed Ravindra Jadeja’s appointment as the new captain of the MS Dhoni-led franchise on Thursday. Veteran all-rounder Jadeja has taken over as CSK’s new captain ahead of their season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 15th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dhoni, who orchestrated CSK’s stunning comeback in IPL 2021, has decided to step down as captain ahead of the new season. On Twitter, defending champions Chennai Super Kings confirmed the appointment of Jadeja as Dhoni’s successor. Former CSK star Suresh Raina has extended his best wishes to Jadeja, who will lead the Yellow Brigade in their title-defending season, in response to the recent development at the Chennai camp.
“Absolutely thrilled for my brother. I can’t think of anyone better to take over the reins of a franchise we both had grown up in. All the best @imjadeja. It’s an exciting phase and I’m sure you will live up to all the expectations and love #yellow #csk #WhistlePodu,” wrote Suresh Raina, who is a part of the elite commentary panel for IPL 2022.
Jadeja is the third player to be named as the CSK franchise’s captain since the IPL’s inception. Suresh Raina, Jadeja’s former teammate, was released by the franchise before the mega auction. While CSK retained Jadeja for INR 16 crore, the defending champions refused to purchase Suresh Raina at the cash-rich league’s mega auction.
Since the inaugural season of the world’s richest T20 league, Dhoni has captained CSK. The four-time IPL champions announced in an official statement that “Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond.” On Saturday, Jadeja will make his captaincy debut in the IPL 2022 opener between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

The 40-year-old cricket legend has led the ‘Men in Yellow’ to four IPL titles during his tenure as the skipper, and the CSK outfit has also qualified to the playoffs stages in almost every season (expect 2020) of the IPL with Dhoni at the helm of affairs.
CSK new captain Ravindra Jadeja has been in 200 IPL games, scored 2386 runs and taken 127 wickets over his career. The 33-year-old has been with the side since 2012. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will play their opening match of the 2022 edition of the IPL against two-time champions and last year’s runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders on 26th March 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
