T20 World Cup: Ravichandran Ashwin shares a beautiful quote after his comeback to the national squad in white-ball cricket
Ravichandran Ashwin's quote
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for the much-awaited 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The list also carried the name of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who hasn’t played any limited-overs game in international cricket.
The 34-year-old has most likely taken the place of Washington Sundar, who has been ruled out till the second phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to an injury. Ashwin’s last outing for India in the shortest format came back on July 9, 2017, against the West Indies.
The Chennai cricketer expressed his happiness over his selection for the all-important tournament. He shared a beautiful tweet that he wrote back in 2017 on being dropped from the national side. He tweeted:
“2017: I wrote this quote down a million times in my diary before putting this up on the wall! Quotes that we read and admire have more power when we internalise them and apply in life.
“Happiness and gratitude are the only 2 words that define me now. #t20worldcup2021″
“Ravichandran Ashwin is an asset for the team” – Chetan Sharma
BCCI’s chief selector Chetan Sharma revealed the reasons behind R Ashwin’s selection in the 15-member squad. He said that India will need an off-spinner on slow wickets of the UAE, and the right-hander had done well there during the last year’s IPL.
“Ravichandran Ashwin has been playing in the IPL regularly. He has performed well there. When you go into the World Cup, you need an off-spinner, everyone has an idea that the wickets in the UAE will get slower as IPL will also be played there. Spinners will get assistance so having an off-spinner holds the key. Washington Sundar is injured and Ashwin is an asset for the team. He has performed well in the IPL so that is why he has found a place for himself in the squad,” Chetan Sharma said.
India’s squad for 2021 T20 WC: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC), KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami.
Stand-by players: Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Chahar, and Shardul Thakur
