Throwback: When Virat Kohli donned the wicket-keeper’s gloves as MS Dhoni had to take a break
Virat Kohli
Indian captain Virat Kohli is undoubtedly one of the most best batsmen to have ever played the game. The elegant batsman has broken record after record and made a name for himself as one who will be spoken about for years and years. Apart from his batting, Kohli has been known to roll his arm over on certain occasions as well. In fact, in the early stages of his career, he used to bowl quite a lot.
Kohli is a medium-pacer and while he has stopped bowling these days, he certainly can be a decent bowler. But apart from both batting and bowling, not many know that Kohli has also previously donned the wicket-keeper’s gloves. It happened during one over of a match between India and Bangladesh in 2015 when regular captain and wicket-keeper MS Dhoni had to take a toilet break, handing over both roles to Kohli who did them well before Dhoni arrived and took over.
Virat Kohli recalls being asked to keep wickets
Virat Kohli opened up about the incident last year to fellow Indian cricketer Mayank Agarwal on a talk show called ‘Open Nets with Mayank’ and he said, “Kabhi Mahi bhai se puchiyo how did this happen (Try and ask Mahi Bhai as to how did this happen). He said ‘yaar do teen over just keep wickets (Mate, please keep wickets for couple of overs)’. I was keeping wickets and also adjusting the field.”
“Then I understood he (Dhoni) has a lot on his plate when he is on the field because he has to focus on every ball and also adjust the field. The one problem was Umesh (Yadav) was bowling and he was bowling gas. I thought naak pe lag jaegy ball (what if I get hit in the face) and I wanted to wear a helmet but then thougt bohot beizati ho jaegy (it would be very humiliating),” Kohli added.
