WATCH – Tim Seifert breaks down while speaking about experience with COVID-19 in India
Tim Seifert
New Zealand cricketer Tim Seifert was among those who was affected by COVID-19 while in India as a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Due to the positive test, the batsman could not travel back home along with his teammates and had to stay back, quarantine and isolate till he recovered before travelling home via a charter flight.
The KKR camp were the first ones to report COVID-19 cases as Indian players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier were found to have tested positive. Soon, more cases in other franchises started to pop up among players and support staff meaning that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had no choice but to suspend the tournament for an indefinite period of time.
Tim Seifert recounts his IPL 2021 experience
Tim Seifert spoke at a press conference today and in the video posted by ESPNcricinfo, he can be seen getting visibly emotional while talking of his experience with COVID-19 in India. “The Chennai Super Kings manager showed me the positive on the top of the test. The world stops and I just couldn’t really think what was next and that was the scariest part of it – you hear about the bad things and I thought that was going to happen to me,” said Seifert.
Seifert then thanked KKR head coach Brendon McCullum and Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming for helping him out. He said, “They made everything a lot easier. They made sure that things would be put in place and the CSK management and CEO of KKR, they made life easy for me to know that everything would be alright and when that time was to come home, they’d try everything to get me home safely.”
“It was definitely hard getting told but once a few days had gone by and everything had calmed down a bit… I just knew it was about getting through it and thinking of the positives. My fiance was quite happy I’m back a bit earlier so I can help with all the planning,” he signed off.
