In the 15 ODI World Cup editions that have been played since 1975, the game has seen many great batters. Batters like Sir Viv Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, etc, have cemented their place in the history of the sport. 

Since 1975, the World Cup has seen plenty of great batting performances that have led teams to victory. Some of these knocks have also been instrumental for teams winning the tournament as well, with centuries being scored when teams are in tough positions.

5. Sourav Ganguly (183 vs SL, 1999)

Sourav Ganguly came in to open against the defending champions in the 1999 World Cup. Despite losing opening partner Sadagoppan Ramesh for only 5 runs, the Maharaja of India started an assault on the incredible bowling attack of Sri Lanka. Facing 158 balls, Ganguly scored 183, the highest by an Indian in the World Cup. His knock saw 17 boundaries and 7 sixes. 

4. Gary Kirsten (188* vs U.A.E, 1996)

South African top order batter, Gary Kirsten, went all guns blazing against the United States Emirates in the 1996 World Cup. Batting against one of the weakest teams in the tournament, Kirsten scored a massive 188, which was the highest World Cup score for over 19 years. His innings saw 13 boundaries and 4 boundaries. 

3. Glenn Maxwell (201* vs Afghanistan, 2023)

Arguably one of the greatest ODI innings of all time, Glenn Maxwell led Australia to victory while batting with cramps. Chasing 292, the Aussies were 91/7 at one point, but thanks to Maxwell’s relentless hitting they won the match. In his 201, Maxwell hit a whopping 21 boundaries and 10 maximums. 

2. Chris Gayle (215 vs Zimbabwe, 2015)

The Universe Boss Chris Gayle showed the world his full strength in the 2015 World Cup, as he hit the first ever double century in World Cup History. Batting against Zimbabwe, Gayle hit 215 in just 147 balls. Hitting 10 boundaries and 16 sixes, Gayle also scored the highest World Cup score, but it was then broken by a certain Kiwi just 4 weeks later.

Just a month after Chris Gayle scored the highest individual score in the World Cup, Martin Guptill broke his record by scoring 237 against Gayle’s team. In their quarter-final fixture, Guptill showed his ruthless side as he hit the Windies bowlers for 24 boundaries and 11 sixes.
