Twitterati fumes as BCCI omits Hanuma Vihari’s name for IND vs NZ Tests despite Syndey heroics

Hanuma Vihari

The iconic Sydney Test match against Australia is still fresh in the minds of all Indian fans where Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin stitched an outstanding match-saving partnership. However, the former could not play again in the series since he had suffered a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Vihari’s name went missing from the 16-member Test squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will lead the side for the maiden game in the absence of Virat Kohli, who’ll be back in the following match.

Later, Vihari was added to the India A squad which is scheduled to play three four-day encounters at Bloemfontein.

“It is better to send him to South Africa. The Indian team will be playing in South Africa later this year. If he scores there then he will be picked for the Indian team against South Africa,” a source in the Indian board said to The Indian Express.

Twitter reactions to Hanuma Vihari’s ‘shocking’ snub from India’s Test squad

This incident triggered the netizens who questioned the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee on not going with the right-handed batter in the main squad. Here are some of the top tweets:

No Hanuma Vihari for the Tests vs #NZ He deserves a home series IMHO.
Shreyas has been picked and might play also since no Kohli for the first Test. No Pant too. Has he also been rested like Rohit-Bumrah-Shami? His numbers in England Tests weren’t very flattering tbh. 🧐

Am I missing something here? I cannot see a reason why #HanumaVihari is not in the test squad for #IndvsNZ. Injury? Can't be on cricketing grounds….there hasn't been any first-class cricket. Surely it can't be right. His last innings for India was that heroic effort at Sydney.

If Hanuma Vihari is indeed not injured then perhaps the selectors’ memories of his selfless heroics in the last Test he played for the country are as blurred as these rather poorly taken live pictures at the SCG in January #IndvNZ pic.twitter.com/YxRio3MB4t

You have to feel sad for Hanuma Vihari 😥

Reports also coming that he has been included in Ind A Test squad against #SouthAfrica A 🙌#HanumaVihari #IndianCricketTeam #T20WorldCup #TeamIndia #india #INDvNZ pic.twitter.com/mJjwDrQTpi

•Made Maiden century in WI when team needed
• Draw a historical Sydeny test with Ash
Hanuma Vihari deserved chance if he is fit in test squad why dropped?
Also he only play in overseas (difficult) conditions! pic.twitter.com/SyOFGpatUU

Unfair decision from BCCI to drop Hanuma Vihari. Vihari along with Ashwin saved Sydney test match. 😢 pic.twitter.com/HXpRRGhBTh
