The 22-year-old was first turned up for the SRH in 2021 when the franchise bought him for Rs. 20 lakhs. But he quickly came under the limelight because of his high bowling speeds. Bowlers like him are scarce in India.

In 2022, Kane Williamson-led SRH retained him for Rs. 4 crores. The Jammu & Kashmir youngster had clocked 152.95 kmph during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021. This was the fastest delivery of IPL 2021.

During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer gave his opinion about the talented Malik and said: “Umran Malik was retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad. It remains to be seen how he performs with the pressure of expectations, having been retained. He is somebody who bowls 150 clicks (kmph). It will be really interesting to see how he turns up in the tournament this time.”
