Australia and South Africa locked horns in the maiden Super 12 match of the ongoing 2021 ICC T20 Cup on Saturday. The result didn’t go in favour of the Proteas, however, their all-rounder Aiden Markram grabbed a supreme catch during the second innings of the game.

The incident became a talking point amongst the commentators as Markram claimed one of the greatest catches in WC history. This took place on the fifth ball of the 15th over off Anrich Nortje, who bowled a short of a length delivery against Australia’s Steve Smith. The batter, who looked set in the middle, looked to pull while Markram dived towards his right and kept his eyes tight on the ball, to safely grab a spectacular catch.

Nail-biting victory for the Aussies, SA batters disappoint

Earlier, Aussie skipper Aaron Finch had asked the opponents to bat first on a bowling-friendly pitch of Abu Dhabi. The kangaroos’ decision reaped fruitful results as their bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals throughout the innings. SA could only manage to post a below-par total of 118-9 on the board at the end of their 20 overs. Notably, all the five bowling options used by the Australian captain were able to tick the wickets column.

In reply, the Down Under team was off to a sluggish start which later turned out to be an issue for them. Their batters struggled against a quality bowling unit but they somehow managed to breach the finishing line as the required target was too low.

In the end, they registered a five-wicket win during the ultimate over of the game to kickstart their campaign on a high note. Aus speedster Josh Hazlewood was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding spell of 4-1-19-2.
