World Test Championship final or T20 World Cup final? – Shubman Gill has his say

Shubman Gill

Young Indian batsman Shubman Gill is set to feature in the biggest match of his career as he will be the favourite to partner Rohit Sharma as the opener for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand next month. The 21-year-old who made his debut in Australia last year and shone in his very first series is expected to pip Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul to retain his opening slot in the side despite his disappointing performances against England.

Gill announced himself in the Test format at the Gabba in the fourth Test that India famously won. Despite losing his opening partner early on Day 5, The batter played positively and ensured that hopes of an Indian victory were always there. His lively 91-run knock set the stage for Rishabh Pant to explode and take India home. Gill then had disappointing outings against England at home, but thanks to his sound technique, it seems like only a matter of time before he regains his touch and gets back to form.

Shubman Gill sat down for a show with ESPNcricinfo titled ’25 questions with Shubman Gill’ where he answered various questions. One of these questions was whether Gill would prefer playing in the final of the WTC or in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup and which among the two was the bigger dream for him. Gill’s answer was the WTC final as he said, “I think the Test championship final because it’s happening for the first time.”

It is noteworthy that Gill hasn’t made his T20I debut for India yet and hence, chances of playing in the ICC T20 World Cup later this year seem very slim. He did not have a very promising Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as well, as he faced issues of intent, albeit on difficult pitches to bat on.
