Gautam Gambhir once again said something that disappointed MS Dhoni fans. During England’s match against Sri Lanka, Gambhir, while talking about English skipper Jos Buttler, pointed out that if a captain only had the ability to win the World Cup, Buttler would have won this 2023 World Cup for England.
England have experienced a disappointing run in the ongoing tournament, for they have won just one out of five matches. That lone win came against Bangladesh.
During England’s match against Sri Lanka, the former suffered a humiliating defeat. They posted a paltry total of 156 which the Lankans chased down to win the match by eight wickets. Gambhir cited Buttler’s example to make fans understand that a captain is not solely responsible for the victory of the team in World Cups, that it’s the effort of every player and their contribution that take the team to glory.
“If only the captain could make you win the World Cup, then Jos Buttler could make England win the World Cup. Why couldn’t Buttler win this World Cup for England?” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
“He could not win the World Cup because the batsmen did not score runs and the bowlers did not take wickets. So, if the credit for winning the tournament goes to only one person, then what will happen to the remaining 14 players? If only the captain could win the World Cup, then Jos Buttler could do it,” he added.
Gautam Gambhir slams England’s poor performance
As always, Gautam Gambhir did not mince his words while slamming England’s lackluster performance. England will have to win the rest of the matches, and the Net Run Rate is set to play a huge role. Their next match is against India, who have remained unbeaten so far in the tournament.
Gambhir, while criticizing England, said the players looked extremely disinterested, and that he did not find a single batter among the English players who can grind. Gambhir also said that if players want to play a certain way with not paying heed to team requirements, then the player is “extremely selfish“. The 2011 World Cup winner feels England are playing for their reputation and not for the country.
