Rohit Sharma is leading from the front in the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup. Except for the first match against Australia, where he got dismissed for a duck, Rohit has been on a roll.
He has played several impactful innings and even scored a century. Former India batter Gautam Gambhir, who is doing commentary in the tournament, heaped praise on the Indian captain.
He said Rohit is a selfless leader who thinks about the team requirements, and that had he been a century-obsessed player, he would have slammed 40-45 centuries by now. “Rohit Sharma would have got 40-45 hundred by now, but he is not obsessed with hundreds. A selfless leader does things himself first before expecting them from his teammates,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
“No PR and marketing can do this for you. You have got to do it yourself,” Gambhir added.
Why Virat Kohli fans will get angry hearing Gautam Gambhir say such things?
Virat Kohli, on two occasions in this World Cup, was seen desperate to score his centuries. The first was against Bangladesh when the 34-year-old tried to reach the three-figure mark when India needed a few runs to win the match.
During India’s encounter against New Zealand, Kohli again focused on scoring his century when the Men in Blue needed a couple of runs to win the game (but he got out after scoring 95 runs). On both occasions, his playing for his century made him a target of criticism among the fans. They opined that the former India captain is obsessed with slamming his ton rather than focusing more on team requirements.
However, it’s important to mention that both the time, against Bangladesh and New Zealand, Kohli played stunning innings to make sure India won the match without much pressure. Other fans supported him for going for the hundreds because of his immense contribution, by taking India to a very comfortable position. So, knowing the past rivalry between Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, the latter’s comments can upset Kohli fans.
