After watching the nail-biting match between Pakistan and South Africa yesterday, fans probably weren’t expecting another breathtaking match so soon in this 2023 ODI World Cup. On Saturday (October 28), Australia successfully defended 389 runs against New Zealand to seal victory by just five runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

New Zealand opted to field first after winning the toss. A century from Travis Head and contributions from other batters, helped Australia post 388 in 49.2 overs.

The Kiwis got off to a brilliant start and after the dismissals of the openers, Rachin Ravindra’s second World Cup century eased the headache of the team in front of the huge target. New Zealand did not lose hope after Aussie skipper Pat Cummins sent Ravindra to packing in the 41st over because the Men in Yellow found it tough to dismiss James Neesham who looked extremely dangerous.

Neesham scored 58 runs from 39 balls and when they needed just five runs to win off the last ball, a brilliant fielding effort from the Aussie side ran Neesham out. From Mitchell Starc’s delivery, Neesham heaved the ball away and Marnus Labuschagne quickly collected the ball and wasted no time in throwing it away toward the batting end. Josh Inglis grabbed the ball to disturb the bails to snatch the victory.
