Since Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced his retirement from the sport in 2016, the iconic last name has been missing in the premier stock car racing division. Though the Earnhardt legacy has been carried by JR Motorsports and Jeffry Earnhardt in the Xfinity Series, it isn’t complete when they are missing at the top-tier.
Over the last few years, especially since the start of the Next-Gen era, there have been multiple rumors that suggests Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister Kelly Earnhardt is looking to buy a charter and race in the Cup series. They family has always admitted the rumours are true, but couldn’t make it because multiple reasons.
Recently via his podcast Dale Jr. again addressed the situation, with multiple charters being there in the market for around $20 to $25 million due to SHR ceasing its operations. Junior doesn’t feel it as the right time to enter the sport buying a charter, which he wants to be a long-term investment, and said some big changes needed in the sport to make it happen.

Junior while talking about his expectations if he owns a Cup Series team, pointed out that he wants a team that is capable of fighting for wins. He doesn’t want any type of partnership, instead wants full control of whatever going on in the team.
For there longest time, me and Kelly thought if were going to race in the Cup Series, we wanted to own and operate. We want to race it out of our building, we wanted to be able to choose crew chiefs and mechanics. We wanted to be the reason or be part of what the car was either successful or winning races or doing well on the track.Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
The Hall of Famer has a point where he states that the Earnhardt wants full control of the team. This is because putting their last name on a car means a lot to the entire racing community and they can’t take it for granted.
