One of the biggest talking points after last Sunday’s race at Chicagoland was the incident involving Zane Smith and Carson Hocevar. The Front Row Motorsports driver wrecked the Spire Motorsports driver, supposedly in retaliation and it has stirred some massive controversy. Hall of Famer Dale Eranhardt Jr. is surprisingly happy to see the chaos.
In the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, the two times Daytona 500 champion highlighted that most of the incidents last Sunday were the garage policing themselves and that needs to continue. He believes the potential of a justified retaliation keeps drivers from making tough decision
I know that Denny had some comments about this; should the sport police itself. And that’s kind of what I saw on Sunday was the garage policing itself. And that’s the same way for all these incidents, right? We don’t need to eradicate it or rid it from the sport. Wouldn’t you agree? Like, a little bit of this is a good thing. And the potential that that guy on the racetrack might park your ass, that being a possibility, needs to be in there, right? And so, it keeps some guys in line.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. added on his podcast.
In the words of Dale Earnhardt Jr. NASCAR needs more controversies and chaotic incidents, there will be more viewers watching the events when the drivers are on their toes. He pointed out that as long as the drivers don’t cross the line in terms of aggression, the incidents are welcome. The veteran seems to be thinking more like a broadcaster than a racer in the situation.
That is what our sport needs. We need controversy. We need some ruffled feathers. We need some hurt feelings. We need some guys that are pissed off. And there is a line, though. There’s a line that you can’t cross that would be in the name of safety, right? We don’t want to right hook. There’s a way to turn a guy. You want to wreck a guy, there’s a way to do it that I wouldn’t say is respected, but it’s accepted.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on the Dale Jr. Download.
Zane Smith slams Carson Hocevar despite Dale Eranhardt Jr.’s comments
The Front Row Motorsports drivers is still furious over Carson Hocevar and the run-ins they have had over the years. It was evident in the comments he made on his appearance on the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast.

He was asked to share his feels about certain NASCAR drivers by the host in one word and when it was the Spire drivers turn, Smith didn’t hold back. He called out the youngster for being over aggressive and causing unnecessary chaos.
ZS: Bumf**k. His fans are the worst part. Have you ever seen the South Park huge guy that’s typing on the keyboard? Those are like all of his fans.
Lewan: Every single driver that’s come on this bus, well, you guys have been the most blunt about it… But after, they’ll be like, no, fuck that guy. The way he drives, all this.
Zane Smith on the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast.
The comments from the racer shows how the whole racing community isn’t happy with the aggressive racing style of the youngster. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the coming days, with him having more enemies than friends in the garage.
