Kayfabe is largely dead in today’s era of professional wrestling. While some fans don’t mind this fact, some still put pressure on wrestlers to keep up the act outside of the ring. Although some superstars get pretty candid outside of their work, it is still considered professional to keep up the pretense of the business while the cameras are still rolling. However, the exact opposite happened at AEW Revolution.

The latest AEW PPV featured Queen of the Ring actress Damaris Lewis present in the live crowd. She was interviewed by Tony Schiavone before the show’s main event between Cope and Jon Moxley. She talked about the lessons she had gotten while playing her role. However, she completely exposed kayfabe by talking about how wrestlers already know they are going to win the match before the bell even rings.

Damaris Lewis stars as Babs Wingo in the recently released Queen of the Ring. The movie centers around Mildred Burke, a pioneer of women’s wrestling during the mid-1900s. Wingo’s character is also based on a real-life African-American women’s wrestler who performed in NWA during the 1960s.

WWE has also stopped pretending that they put on real fights, and they also took flak for doing something very similar a few months ago. The debut episode of Raw Netflix featured an opening video segment that seemed to expose the business. The video featured Triple H revealing how there were faces and heels in professional wrestling. He even mentioned some of the backstage antics that go on in producing such a show.

The wrestling world reacts to Damaris Lewis exposing professional wrestling at AEW Revolution

Wrestling fans were surprised to hear this comment from Damaris Lewis at AEW Revolution, a wrestling show being broadcast live around the world. Netizens said that her exposing the business like that felt totally unnecessary. Some social media users even felt that it was disrespectful to all the competitors who had performed that night and sacrificed their bodies weekly to entertain their fans.

Some fans also expressed sympathy for the actress. They said that she was not fully familiar with the traditions of professional wrestling. Furthermore, she wasn’t aware that such things are not to be talked about in front of the camera. In an era filled with superstar interviews, dirt sheets and journalists, perhaps this didn’t matter too much.

Fans also took this opportunity to bring up The Rock’s similar antics. During post-show press conferences, The People’s Champion completely breaks character. He talks about what goes on in his head while playing the role of The Final Boss. He also talks about how fans would perceive his segments and what he personally thinks about the ongoing stories.
