Damian Lillard was restricted to more of a cheerleading role for the Portland Trail Blazers last season as he was ruled out for the entire 2025-26 campaign due to a long-term injury. It was an impressive season for the Trail Blazers as they made it to the playoffs for the first time in five years.
The 35-year-old was drafted by the Trail Blazers as the sixth pick in the 2012 NBA draft. He spent 11 seasons during his first stint in Portland and led them to a number of postseasons. He established himself as the face of the franchise.
However after 11 years, Lillard was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks and joined forces with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Fast-forward to today, both players have parted ways with the Bucks.
A video was shared on social media where Davion Mitchell of the Heat was simply training with Antetokounmpo in Greece. A fan took shots at Lillard in the comment section. Lillard was having none of it and responded.
“Play w somebody else.”

It was a difficult two-year spell for Lillard after getting traded to the Bucks. His time in Milwaukee ended in the worst possible way as he tore his Achilles during the first round of the playoffs last year. The Bucks decided to cut off their losses and waived him in the offseason last year.
There were a lot of hopes on the Bucks when they brought in Lillard in 2023. With Antetokounmpo still performing at an MVP level, it was expected that the Bucks would win a championship in the upcoming years. Unfortunately, injuries to both their star players at crucial stages stopped them from making any deep playoff run.
Damian Lillard may be holding back on his frustrations with Giannis Antetokounmpo and his former team
It is unfortunate that Damian Lillard was not able to contribute much during his time in Milwaukee. They were beaten by the Indiana Pacers in the first round in 2024 and 2025. However, after waiving off Lillard, the Bucks have finally traded away their franchise player, Antetokounmpo, to the Miami Heat after 13 years.
While it looked like Lillard and Antetokounmpo shared a good relationship with each other, his statements on X seemed to suggest that there may be something more than meets the eye. When the NBA fan scrutinized Lillard in the comment section, the nine-time All-Star fired back at the fan with a cryptic comment about the Bucks.
Lol [expletive] don’t want Dame to tell it. Be thankful I ain’t running my mouth like these other suckas… carry on.

Lillard’s statements did catch many by surprise, as it looks like he is holding something back against his former teammates and club. A couple of months ago, Myles Turner exposed the Greek superstar for his tardiness and causing a hindrance to his teammates. Unfortunately, Lillard did not comment any further.
How far can Damian Lillard lead the Trail Blazers next season?
It remains to be seen how Lillard’s return will be after a devastating injury. Not only will he be returning after a long-term injury, but he will be 36 years old as well.

There is no doubt that Lillard is one of the best shooters in the game. He won the All-Star 3-Point contest this year despite having a torn Achilles. His style of play is not very reliant on athleticism, which could benefit him in the long run.
With their star player out for the season, the Trail Blazers impressed many with their performances. In Lillard’s absence, Deni Avdija emerged as the main player and earned his maiden All-Star appearance this year. He led the franchise to their first playoffs since the 2020-21 campaign as they finished at eighth place in the Western Conference standings.
Their run came to an end as they faced the San Antonio Spurs in the first round. It was a difficult matchup that saw them get eliminated in five games. With Lillard back next season, the Trail Blazers will be looking to make it to the playoffs once again and possibly pull off an upset in the first round.
