The video teasing LeBron James' return to the Miami Heat was apparently a case of forward planning gone wrong.

LeBron James‘ future is the million-dollar question in the NBA at the moment. It has been over three weeks since the Los Angeles Lakers announced that James would not be signing a new contract after spending eight years with them. He has never spent more time at a franchise in a single stint before.

Clubs have been lining up to sign the unrestricted free agent. It has been reported that 10 to 12 clubs have contacted James’ camp since he became a free agent. The four-time champion is testing free agency for the fourth time in his career and for the first time in eight years.

One of the clubs he has been rumored to join is the Miami Heat. James’ free agency saga was on high alert on Tuesday when the Heat posted a video on its YouTube channel announcing the team was preparing for an introductory press conference. The announcement read:

LeBron James Introductory Press Conference’ set for July 27, 2026.

The Heat are coming off a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. After getting clean-swept in the first round of the playoffs last year, they missed the playoffs altogether this year after losing to the Charlotte Hornets in the Play-In Tournament. Hence, it was clear that they needed to make some big changes in the roster.

Pat Riley did not waste any time as the Heat pulled off the biggest move in the offseason by trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. With a frontcourt of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, the Heat are trying to add James and some shooters to the roster.

The Heat President even dismissed any beef with James after their fallout during James’ first stint in Miami. However, as of now, no announcement has been made, and the scheduled live stream supposedly for James’ introductory press conference was quickly taken down.

This is not the first time that a mistake has intensified speculation regarding James’ future. Last week, ESPN confused everyone when the title of the latest episode of Pardon The Interruption indicated that he would be joining the Golden State Warriors. It caught several eyeballs before it was taken down.

While the Heat were quick to take it down, they could not escape the ones watching closely. The news spread in no time, and fans were caught buzzing across social media.

While some fans did show some excitement, many were quick to notice that it was taken down. Some joked that whoever was responsible for putting it up may get fired very soon.

The Heat have been open in their pursuit of LeBron James. They have been one of the frontrunners for James along with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors. Their priority is to sign a decision-maker and ball-handler in James and add some shooters to the team.

The Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang reported the Heat’s social media team uploaded the video in error.

It was a mistake by the Heat’s social media department while preparing for the possibility of LeBron picking the Heat. But there is no validity to it right now.

If there is anyone who could pull it off, it is Pat Riley. The former head coach has been clear about making more additions to the roster as they look to contend for a championship next year. But for now, James is in no rush to make any announcement.
