LeBron James‘ future continues to be up in the air. He has been linked to a number of clubs ever since he decided to test free agency a couple of weeks ago. This is the first time James is an unrestricted free agent since 2018.

The Miami Heat pulled off the biggest move of the offseason so far by trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. The move showed that the Heat are looking to contend for a championship after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that saw them miss the playoffs.

James has been linked to several clubs over the last two weeks, and the Heat are one of them. While the Heat try to pursue their former champion, they have been linked to another champion in Klay Thompson.

Miami Herald reported that the Heat are interested in adding Thompson irrespective of what happens with James.

After winning his fourth championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2022, Klay Thompson has struggled with his form and consistency since. The Warriors decided not to give him a new contract, and his 13-year stint came to an end after he joined the Dallas Mavericks.

Thompson had a below-par 2025-26 campaign and found himself in a new role off the bench. But it looks like the 36-year-old may be on the move once again this year.

The Heat are actively trying to pursue James for a second stint after trading for Antetokounmpo. The roster is still a work in progress, and they still have some way to go before they can contend for a championship. The front office is building the team around Bam Adebayo and the Greek star.

Trying to acquire James and Thompson does make a lot of sense. The 41-year-old will provide playoff experience and be the team’s decision-maker, while Thompson will provide much-needed three-point shooting.

LeBron James to the Miami Heat makes sense

On paper, a move to the Heat makes a lot of sense for LeBron James. He spent four years in the franchise in his first stint, where he won two championships. With a frontcourt duo of Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, James joining them would make them serious title contenders next season.

Sports analyst Max Kellerman believes that James going to Miami would make a lot of sense.

I can see him going to Miami. They have a great defensive team right now. They have 4 positions nailed down. Just the athletic ability and defense, and really two bigs now in Giannis and Bam. It’s going to be very hard to score on that team. Given LeBron’s age, it’s kind of what he needs. Other guys picking up the slack defensively on a nightly basis so that in the high leverage moments he can pick and choose when he plays defense. I can see it.

James is not the defender he once was, and it is a lot to expect for a 41-year-old to have an impact on both ends of the court on a nightly basis. With the two big men, James can get the best out of them in the offensive end with his elite passing ability.

Klay Thompson is going to be on the Miami Heat this season

With a frontcourt of Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, the Heat will need to surround them with some good shooters. There is no doubt that Thompson is one of the greatest shooters of all time, but he has been a shell of himself in recent years. He has had a few bright sparks last season, but overall he is not the player he once was.

Former NFL star Chad Johnson revealed that Thompson is joining the Heat in the offseason.

Klay will be there. I mean, I’m not supposed to be revealing this information but I’m just throwing it out there. Nobody want to listen to me but I’ve been right all along…. When he’s down here in Miami lighting sh*t up in the Kaseya center.

Chad Johnson on Nightcap

There must be some truth to Johnson’s statements. He did say that Antetokounmpo will be joining the Heat even before the trade was finalized. If the move does happen, Thompson will have a much better chance of winning his fifth title in Miami rather than in Dallas.
