Quite a lot has changed since the time the Los Angeles Lakers were favored to re-sign LeBron James to another contract. Not only is the franchise at a disadvantage, but others have gained the upper hand.
The purple and gold franchise had some major adjustments to be made to its roster if they are to compete for the NBA championship.
Their preference is for Luka Doncic to lead the charge, and that meant building a team that complements him. It also means that any preferential treatment towards the King goes out the window.
They conducted their first order of business by securing the services of Austin Reaves for the long-term. Then, they drafted a player who can complement the undrafted guard and Doncic.
In the midst of this, there are rumors that the Lakers have not conducted any dialogue with the league’s all-time leading scorer. Then the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to the Miami Heat dropped.
With rumors of LeBron James possibly returning to the team that helped him win his first two championships gaining steam, Stephen A. Smith said this on First Take-
If he called Pat Riley and said, ‘Listen, I want to come back and join Giannis and Bam,’ you think Riley will tell him no? He ain’t gonna tell him no… It’s LeBron, and that is his reality. A reality, by the way, he has earned.

The ESPN analyst believes that all the notions about James and Pat Riley‘s past beef hampering any chances of a reunion do not matter. If the four-time champion wants that, the Godfather will make it happen.
Analyst dismisses LeBron James’ beef with Heat
There are enough stories that Pat Riley taking away LeBron James’ cookies was one of the reasons for his eventual departure from the Miami Heat. But now, that may not matter.
They conduct themselves with professionalism and class. I’ve got nothing but wonderful, positive things to say about what I experienced in Miami. I think LeBron might feel the same. He still mimics some of the stuff Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra would say.
Brian Windhorst said on The Press Box
Brian Windhorst pointed out how the Los Angeles Lakers superstar has been saying good things about the Heat organization, Riley, and Erik Spoelstra.

He was one of the first to applaud the latter getting a contract he deserved. Therefore, this notion that James might not return due to ill feelings might not be true.
In fact, with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, players that LeBron James highly admires, at South Beach, it is possible that the Akron native might be enticed by the possibility of wearing the red and white again.
Lakers’ opinion on LeBron James will be revealed in a week
Even though the latest discussions are about LeBron James possibly returning to the Miami Heat, the Los Angeles Lakers are still considered the superstar’s first option.

We’ll see what the priorities are for every side. How much do the Lakers prioritize LeBron James? How much does LeBron James prioritize LA?… We’re going to know in the next 7 to 10 days what that looks like.
Shams Charania revealed on Get Up
This means that the Lakers are still AWOL regarding their offer to the 41-year-old. With quite a few free agents yet to be signed, the franchise is taking its time.

It also means that the four-time league MVP is not their priority. If they sign him now, they will lose valuable cap space. But if they wait too long, their offer might not be good enough to compete with those he receives from other teams.
