The Minnesota Timberwolves made their first big move in the offseason as they traded for LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets. The move saw Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps, and three second-round picks go to the Hornets.

The Hornets drafted the youngest member of the Ball family as the number three pick of the 2020 NBA draft. While Ball did show promising signs and became the face of the franchise, he was not able to lead his team to the playoffs in his six seasons with the Hornets.

LaMelo’s father, LaVar Ball, praised the Wolves for trading for LaMelo and suggested they make two more additions by bringing in LaMelo’s brothers, Lonzo and LiAngelo Ball.

Minnesota Timberwolves. Y’all did the coldest move in the game. You went and got that Melo. Let me give you the recipe. You got to get the other two Ball boys. You get the other two Ball boys, it will be the most watched team ever in the NBA. Trust me when I tell you. Don’t think I’m just talking? No, I’m not. Melo can’t win it by himself, but I tell you, with his brothers, I guarantee y’all a championship.

The Wolves have been active in the early days of the offseason. They shipped away Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team deal and offered a new contract to Ayo Dosunmu. Just two days later, they made the move for LaMelo Ball.

LaVar Ball has played a key role in bringing up three Ball brothers and has always defended his three sons whenever they have faced criticism over the years. It is still early days in the offseason, and it will be interesting to see if the Wolves will take LaVar’s advice into consideration.

LaVar Ball has trained his three sons to play together and not by themselves

There is no doubt that LaMelo Ball is the most successful of the three brothers. While he has faced criticism due to his inconsistent form, he was named as an All-Star in 2022 and is one of the most entertaining players in the league.

LaVar Ball believes the additions of Lonzo and LiAngelo Ball to the Wolves would result in a championship.

I never taught my boys to play by themselves. But together, you can’t beat them. You can get Lonzo damn near for nothing. You can get Gelo damn near for nothing. Guess what? Coming off the bench, starting, team chemistry, morale in the locker room, whatever you want. With them Ball boys together, you can’t lose. You want the championship? Get them other two, and I guarantee a championship.

Lonzo Ball has not played a game since February after making 35 appearances for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs traded him to the Utah Jazz at the trade deadline, but he was waived on the same day. Meanwhile, LiAngelo Ball has not played in the NBA to date.

LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards can be one of the most exciting duos in the NBA

LaMelo Ball’s move to the Wolves sees him join forces with Anthony Edwards. Edwards was drafted as the number one pick in the same draft class as LaMelo.

Over the last three years, Edwards has established himself as one of the best players in the league. He is coming off his best scoring season in the NBA this year. Together with LaMelo, the Wolves possess one of the most exciting backcourts and will be an entertaining team to watch next season.

While LaMelo does not have a playoff appearance to his name, Edwards has been a force to reckon with in the Western Conference. He led the Wolves to consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances in 2024 and 2025.

Unfortunately, the Wolves were beaten by the San Antonio Spurs in six games in the second round this year. Hence, it is not surprising to see the front office make some big moves this early in the offseason.
