In Short
  • Damir Dzumhur confronted Coleman Wong after a double fault led to a point loss during their Challenger match.
  • Wong remained calm during the confrontation and expressed a desire to learn emotional control from top players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
  • Dzumhur has struggled in recent tournaments, including early exits at the Indian Wells Masters and Australian Open.

Damir Dzumhur locked horns with Coleman Wong in the opening round of a Challenger tournament in Cap Cana. The Hong Kong native came from a set down to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win.

In a game in the third set, Dzumhur was broken due to a double fault. Wong was quite happy the way he won the point, but it irked Dzumhur. The Bosnian asked him why he was so joyful after winning a point due to his double fault. “Yes, on a double fault? Funny, huh? Look at my face and laugh!” said Dzumhur and repeated these sentences several times.

Prior to the Challenger event, the 33-year-old lost to Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters. It’s the first time this season that he competed in a Challenger after disappointing runs in the tour-level events.

At the Australian Open, Dzumhur, who has yet to progress to the fourth round in Grand Slams, lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the second round. He has so far won three singles titles, the last of which he lifted at the 2018 Antalya Open by beating Adrian Mannarino.

Coleman Wong wants to follow Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner when it comes to managing emotions

While Damir Dzumhur was yelling at him, Coleman Wong kept his calm and hydrated himself. At the press conference afterward, the 21-year-old said that, though he is very emotional, he is trying to learn from Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner how to control his emotions, even in the toughest situations.

I’ve watched many of his matches, and I knew what was coming. Many people know how he is, and also how tough he can be… I also consider myself very emotional, but I need to learn. This is how the best players do it. I look at Alcaraz and Sinner… they stay calm in the most important moments. That’s why they’re so good. When you stay calm, you make the best decisions.

Wong also played in Indian Wells but failed to progress to the main draw. He has so far played five main draw matches in Masters 1000 but never once in the California desert.

Whether you win or lose, you still know what you need to improve if you analyse things calmly. I’m still learning, and I know I have a long way to go. I’ve only been on tour for a few years, I’m growing, but I know I need to improve and keep a positive mindset.

Alcaraz and Sinner, on the other hand, have reached the semifinals. The Spaniard will be up against Daniil Medvedev in what will also be their ninth meeting. Alcaraz holds a 6-2 lead over the 2021 US Open champion, who knocked out defending champion Jack Draper.

Alcaraz is bidding to win his third title at Indian Wells, having beaten Medvedev in 2023 and 2024. Last year, Draper eliminated him in the semifinals. The seven-time Grand Slam champion is also chasing his third title of the season following his successful campaigns at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open. Alcaraz, who is on a 16-match winning streak, defeated Novak Djokovic in Melbourne and Arthur Fils in Doha.

Sinner has never tasted success in the first Masters 1000 of the season, losing in 2023 and 2024 in the semifinals. He skipped the event last year due to his three-month doping ban. The four-time Grand Slam champion has yet to win a title since defeating Alcaraz in the 2025 ATP Finals. Sinner will be locking horns with Alexander Zverev in the Indian Wells semifinals.
