- Damir Dzumhur received death threats aimed at his family following his match at the Bucharest Open.
- Zlatan Dzumhur, his brother, highlighted the normalization of abusive online behavior towards athletes.
- Dzumhur expressed outrage over the targeting of his family, calling such actions "sick."
Damir Dzumhur is competing at the Bucharest Open, an ATP 250 clay-court event. Following his opening-round win over Filip Cristian Jianu, the 33-year-old shared a message from an abuser, who is likely to be a gambler.
The abuser wished death upon the entire Dzumhur family. It was Dzumhur’s brother, Zlatan Dzumhur, who received the abusive messages.
I don’t know what @damirdzumhur means to you, but I wish him and his entire family a death in agonizing suffering.
Dzumhur took to Instagram and re-shared his brother’s Instagram story. Zlatan revealed that it’s not the first time that he’s received such messages from the abusers and wrote that such behavior from these fans online should not be normalized.
I get messages like this from time to time, and honestly, it’s wild how comfortable people became saying things they would never say face to face. Now imagine what athletes and public figures deal with every single day. The intensity, the constant negativity, it’s on another level. We normalize this kind of behavior way too easily online. Don’t forget there’s a real person on the other side of every profile.
Zlatan Dzumhur wrote on Instagram story
Dzumhur was furious that not just him, but the abusers are targeting his family as well.
This is getting so sick! I accepted that I can’t change many things in life, and one of them is this kind of persons texting me after matches with the worst possible words. But then they are not just texting me but my family as well. How sick you have to be to do this kind of things. Where the world goes?
Damir Dzumhur added
His opening round win has helped the Bosnian ace improve his head-to-head lead over Jianu to 2-0. Dzumhur will next be locking horns with Nuno Borges, against whom he trails 0-1, having lost their meeting in the round of 32 of the 2026 Hong Kong Open.

Dzumhur is chasing the third title of his career in Bucharest, previously winning titles at the 2017 St. Petersburg Open, 2017 Kremlin Cup, and Antalya Open the following year.
Supervisor calls a heckler an idiot during the Damir Dzumhur versus Jannik Sinner match
World No.2 Jannik Sinner started his campaign in the recently concluded Miami Open against Damir Dzumhur. A heckler repeatedly interrupted the match and upset Dzumhur.

Damir is upset with the guy with the green shirt, and Jannik is telling me he’s baiting on the back. I don’t know what we should do. Maybe we could talk to him to relax.
The chair umpire asked the supervisor
The supervisor was rather blunt in his response as he called the heckler an “idiot,” and upon hearing this, the chair umpire laughed.

Sinner went on to defeat Dzumhur and later reached the final and defeated Jiri Lehecka to complete the Sunshine Double. The Italian ace took home the Indian Wells title against 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.
Sinner will be kick-starting his campaign on the clay swing at the Monte Carlo Masters, which he skipped last year due to his doping ban. Because he has no points to defend in The Principality, the tournament will be very crucial in terms of the No.1 ranking because Carlos Alcaraz will be playing the third Masters 1000 of the season as the defending champion.
The Spaniard, thanks to his three big Titles on the clay swing last year, as well as his runner-up finish at the Barcelona Open, has 4,300 points to defend on the surface.
