Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has moved to quash growing speculation that linked him with a move to fill the vacant spot at Texas A&M. As a well-known alumnus; it’s no surprise that he would be considered as an option at Kyle Field, but by all accounts the 47-year-old has no intention of leaving Ford Field any time soon.

Campbell is into his third season with the Lions and has certainly seen his NFL side progress from one that had a 3-13-1 record in his first campaign and is now 7-2 for the current season. That form has no doubt led many Detroit fans to make the most of Michigan sportsbooks with bets on the Lions to make a concerted impact and possibly an outside shot of a first Super Bowl triumph since 1957.

As for a move to take over as Aggies head coach, there are reports suggesting that Campbell reached out via back channels to inform Texas A&M that they should look elsewhere for potential candidates to replace Jimbo Fisher, who was axed after Texas lost 51-10 to Mississippi State.

Campbell is into his 12th NFL season, nine of which were as an assistant coach at the Miami Dolphins and the New Orleans Saints, and therefore, a move out of the league would appear to be a little early given the success he has achieved up to now at Detroit.

Between 1995 and 1998, Campbell played at Texas A&M, playing in 48 games as a tight end, and though the connections to the program are strong, it’s unsurprising that he’s chosen to turn down any potential advances at this stage.

College football insider Bruce Feldman outlined just how ideal a replacement Campbell would be for Fisher, stating;

“I think if you’re a Texas A&M diehard, your dream candidate is the guy who’s got the Detroit Lions rolling,”

“He’s a Texas A&M guy. Every time you see a minute of Dan Campbell in a locker room scene, talking to his team, you’re like, holy cow, that guy. That’s the guy who should be the head coach here, but he’s also the guy who may have [the Lions] make a playoff run. The timing is awful and you’re not getting them to leave, so he’s out.” Feldman added.

He then went on to discuss the more realistic targets for A&M, commenting;

“Once you get past that these are not flashy names, are not big personalities,”

“The average college football fan doesn’t know who either of those guys are — but that shouldn’t matter.”

Campbell, who is notoriously outspoken, has discussed his penchant for brave late calls and tactical decision-making, pointing out that these might have to result in his family adjusting their pre-game clothing choices, amusingly stating,

“Here’s what I would say, because I tell my family this, just wear a diaper before some of these games,”

“I’ll give them an alert and say, ‘Put them on and be ready to roll,” Campbell added.
