According to ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, the Los Angeles Lakers plan to make a sizable, long-term contract offer to UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley and lure the two-time NCAA national champion to the NBA. Interestingly, this would put off all the rumors surrounding former NBA player JJ Redick joining the Lakers as their head coach next season.

This is expected to be a huge coup for the Lakers if they manage to secure the services of Hurley in the coming days. In addition, Hurley and Lakers have had initial communication, and in the next few days, both parties intend to ramp up the talks. Hurley has been on top of the Lakers’ search from the beginning, even though the team conducted due diligence and spoke with several other applicants.

Additionally, Wojnarowski reported that Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss are eager to have a formal discussion with Hurley regarding his successful program. Hurley’s program would be built on both his tactical skill and great player development, combined with the Lakers brand in the vision of Pelinka and Buss. It remains to be seen how this story unfolds in the next few days or weeks.

Dan Hurley boasts an excellent coaching career in college basketball

The UConn’s men’s basketball coach, Dan Hurley has been making rounds on the internet lately due to his name being involved with the Los Angeles Lakers‘ head coach position. Interestingly, Hurley boasts of an excellent career (292-163) as a college basketball coach. Hurley has coached men’s collegiate basketball at the highest level for 14 seasons, amassing approximately 300 victories.

UConn hired Hurley after he led the Rams to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in 2017 and 2018. The Huskies weren’t at their best before appointing Hurley as their head coach. However, after Hurley’s appointment, the Huskies have completely destroyed their opponents in the last two NCAA tournaments.

In 2023, UConn defeated every school it faced in the tournament by a margin of at least 13 points en route to defeating San Diego State for the national championship. With Hurley’s name coming up as a surprise candidate on the Lakers’ head coach list, it will be intriguing to know who the Lakers finally appoint as their head coach for the next 2024-25 NBA season.
