The UFC heavyweight division has historically been one of the most entertaining, featuring legends and unforgettable knockouts artists that captivated fans. However, in recent years, the division has experienced a noticeable decline, with fewer finishes and a lack of fresh contenders. While many fans are confused about this situation, top heavyweight Curtis Blaydes believes this downturn was expected.

The current UFC heavyweight division lacks strong challengers who can truly convince fans they are worthy of being called championship material today. Blaydes recently spoke in an interview about how the heavyweight division lacked depth compared to past generations of elite competitors. While responding, ‘Razor’ explained what has changed over the last decade and why the shift was undeniable.

I remember when I first got into the UFC in 2016, we still had Andre Arlovski, we had Junior [Dos Santos], Hunt, Velasquez, Ngannou, Werdum, Stipe. Only OGs. But it just happens it comes in waves. So, maybe in another five years we will get 8-9 great young heavyweights but I’m not overly worried about it.

As Blaydes mentioned, the golden age of the UFC heavyweight division featured legendary fighters who delivered unforgettable battles and highlight-reel knockouts. Icons like Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, and Stipe Miocic dominated with skill, cardio, and power. During this era, every fight felt significant, and the division had depth with multiple contenders.

Fans witnessed wars, title changes, and incredible rivalries that defined the division’s peak, creating some of MMA’s greatest moments. In comparison, today’s UFC heavyweight division lacks the elite skill level as before. Fighters like Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall bring power, but overall, the division feels less competitive. Many heavyweights rely on clinching rather than brawls, leading to a lack of exciting contenders.

Curtis Blaydes on the ongoing halt in the heavyweight division

Since Jon Jones became the UFC heavyweight champion, the division has stalled, lacking consistent title defenses and movement. His injury delayed fights, leaving interim champion Tom Aspinall in limbo. Aspinall’s dominance suggests he’s a future star, but without an undisputed title shot, his momentum is stalled. Meanwhile, contenders like Sergei Pavlovich and Curtis Blaydes await opportunities.

The division’s excitement has faded compared to past eras, with uncertainty surrounding when Jones will return or if he’ll fight Aspinall. This has given birth to various narratives against the champion, accusing him of ducking the UK native and not fighting. While discussing it, Blaydes mentioned that Jones is to be blamed for this situation.

This is all on Jon, he’s the hold-up. I don’t know, I’m not saying he’s scared because he’s Jon Jones like what does he have to be scared of? I do believe, even though it’s not fear, I think he’s accepting that he’s older, a little slower, it’s harder to heal from little bumps and bruises and that stuff.

Curtis Blaydes continued.

Dana White confirmed that Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall is next, but negotiation delays have frustrated the interim champion significantly. Aspinall feels his prime years are passing and insists he deserves an opportunity. The Brit has even suggested that Jones vacate the title, allowing the division to move forward instead of stalling.

Who will be the next UFC heavyweight champion?

Jon Jones could remain the UFC heavyweight champion if he recovers fully and successfully defends his title against Tom Aspinall when it happens. Aspinall has the strongest chance to become undisputed champion if he defeats Jones or if ‘Bones’ vacates his heavyweight championship belt.

Sergei Pavlovich or Jailton Almeida might get a title shot if negotiations between Jones and Aspinall stall or if Jones decides to retire. Francis Ngannou could potentially reclaim UFC gold if he ever returns, but that will likely not happen due to his beef with the UFC CEO.
