Dana White has seen countless UFC stars come and go throughout the promotion’s history. Yet even after decades in the sport, he has never seen another figure quite like Conor McGregor. The Irishman debuted in the UFC in 2013 and became a key force behind the organization’s global growth. Now, years later, White has reflected on the first meeting that convinced him McGregor was destined for greatness.
After success in Cage Warriors, McGregor entered UFC in 2013 and dominated Marcus Brimage in his debut fight. His rise accelerated with an iconic 2015 UFC 194 knockout of Jose Aldo to capture the featherweight title in just 13 seconds. He later made history at UFC 205 by defeating Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC’s first simultaneous two-division champion, cementing his status as a global star.
Since then, McGregor has become the face of the UFC due to his marketability and global appeal. His fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 generated 2.4 million pay-per-view buys. He is set to return against Max Holloway at UFC 329 after five years away from competition. White has recently revisited his first meeting with the Irishman, reflecting on how he first recognized his potential.
I went to dinner with Conor McGregor when I didn’t know Conor. I left the dinner and called Lorenzo Fertitta and said I don’t know if this guy can fight, but if he can even throw a punch, this guy is gonna be the biggest star ever.

Dana White says a short dinner with Conor McGregor changed everything for him. He remembers calling Lorenzo Fertitta right after, saying McGregor had the charisma to become the biggest star in the sport if he could fight.

Even before the UFC 329 announcement, White was confident that McGregor would return to competition without doubt. This belief persisted despite setbacks in the Irishman’s recent career. At UFC 303, he was scheduled to face Michael Chandler in a planned comeback fight. However, McGregor withdrew at the last minute due to an unforeseen toe injury, delaying his return to the octagon.
White has often maintained that fighters must prove themselves inside the cage to succeed in the UFC. The UFC head honcho has consistently emphasized that performance determines opportunity, with fighters largely controlling the trajectory of their own careers. However, he has also acknowledged that McGregor represented a unique case, as the Irishman excelled both inside and outside the octagon.
Dana White’s early gamble on Conor McGregor has proven highly successful for both him and the UFC. The Irishman has featured in some of the promotion’s biggest events. Even now, despite years of inactivity, tickets for UFC 329 sold out instantly upon release. This continued demand highlights The Notorious One’s enduring appeal to audiences and lasting influence on the sport.
Dana White reveals the real reason behind hosting UFC Freedom 250
When US President Donald Trump announced a UFC event on the White House grounds in 2025, Dana White immediately began intensive planning and production work. One major detail involved spending around $700,000 on grass to prepare the event surface. The overall budget for the project was estimated at roughly $60 million. White also made multiple trips to Washington, D.C., to oversee preparations.

The announcement of the UFC White House event sparked backlash, with critics arguing it blurred the line between politics and MMA. Concerns centered on the symbolism of holding a combat sports event on presidential grounds and its broader implications for the sport. White recently clarified that his intent was unity rather than division, and he recently revisited that original vision behind the event.
What I wanted out of this event was some unity and I said leading up to this thing, I don’t care what your politics are this is for all Americans and I haven’t seen everybody argue with me now that the event is over.
