UFC CEO Dana White is known for keeping details under wraps until the last moment. A few months ago, UFC lightweight veteran Dustin Poirier announced that he would only participate in one final fight for the promotion. With that in mind, while White is trying to build suspense around this event, Beneil Dariush recently revealed who Poirier will face in his retirement fight.
The most recent UFC PPV event was headlined by superstar Alex Pereira. The excitement builds with the International Fight Week approaching, and there are rumors of potential champion vs. champion matchups. However, nothing has been confirmed or announced by the promotion yet. Amid that, Beneil Dariush has dropped some major hints that Dustin Poirier’s upcoming opponent could be Max Holloway.
Right now, my understanding is Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway are gonna fight, that’s what I’m hearing. I don’t know if it’s 100 percent sealed and done but that’s what I’m hearing.

The UFC lightweight division is widely regarded as one of the most competitive divisions in the promotion. Following Poirier’s request for a retirement fight, the ‘Diamond’ received proposals and callouts from numerous rising 155-pound fighters. However, the American fighter was clear about his conditions for the fight – a desire to compete only against established fighters in the UFC.

Max Holloway has built a solid reputation in the UFC over the past decade. As one of the decorated fighters in the featherweight division, the Hawaiian fighter has also competed in the lightweight category. Throughout his career, Holloway and Poirier have faced each other twice. If Dariush’s information is accurate, a trilogy fight between them could meet the conditions set by Poirier.
Is Beneil Dariush interested in fighting Dustin Poirier?
Beneil Dariush, an Iranian-American fighter, is a veteran in the UFC lightweight division. Since his debut in the promotion, Dariush has consistently worked to elevate his status in the UFC. However, his recent performance has raised concerns. According to the Iranian-American fighter, to revive his career, facing significant opponents like Dustin Poirier could be crucial.

Most recently, Dariush was scheduled to face Renato Moicano at UFC 311. However, due to significant last-minute changes, the Iranian-American fighter was removed from the fight card. As Dariush gradually slips away from the top contenders list in the UFC lightweight division, he believes that fighting specific opponents like Poirier and Max Holloway could help him regain his standing.
Mostly it’s the elevation of my position [in the division]. It’s kind of where, I think… you know, if I beat Dustin Poirier, I’m pretty much back in title contention. I think same thing with Max Holloway. Maybe not so much with, what’s his name, Michael Chandler? But I still think it puts me in a pretty good place so that’s, kind of, my mindset.

Dariush is currently on a two-fight losing streak in the UFC, having suffered dominating losses to Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan. More importantly, the Iranian-American fighter hasn’t competed in the octagon since December 2023. Now, it will be interesting to see who and when the UFC book Dariush against next.
