Jack Della Maddalena just shocked the world by becoming the new UFC welterweight champion with an incredible and dominant performance. He did that by dismantling Belal Muhammad in a competitive bout at UFC 315 that kept fans on the edge throughout. The Aussie fighter wants to continue the momentum and do the same to the pound-for-pound ace Islam Makhachev in his next outing.

Before the fight, Della Maddalena was hyped about the possibilities of fighting Makhachev as the Dagestani wanted to move up. After UFC 315, Makhachev immediately announced his next move up, in order to get the second belt and make history. During the octagon interview, JDM accepted the challenge and even had a call with CEO Dana White later on about this matter.

Makhachev’s next fight? In Perth? Let’s go, cheers Dana, thanks Hunter.

White and UFC CBO Hunter Campbell congratulated Della Maddalena on the incredible win and promised to talk about the superfight soon. However, the UFC boss was not ready to confirm JDM vs. Makhachev at that moment. Instead, he just said, “We’ll get this figured out.”

From the look of things, it appears the promotion has now missed out on another superfight between Makhachev and former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. If Muhammad were to beat JDM, the Dagestani would have been forced to fight the dangerous Georgian-Spanish striker in his next outing.

Most fans were hyped about watching Makhachev go against Topuria, given their fighting style and incredible winning momentum in recent performances. As a result, they made sure to mock the lightweight king, accusing him of running away from Topuria and avoiding real danger. He was also accused of celebrating his brother, Muhammad’s loss just because he could get his second belt instead.

But all these doesn’t seem to bother Makhachev who has been planning his welterweight move long before Topuria came into picture. He has already defended his lightweight belt four times, which is more than anybody else in the history of UFC championships. It would be interesting to see if he can become a legend of the sport by winning the second belt against JDM.

Islam Makhachev’s chances against Jack Della Maddalena

Going into UFC 315, Jack Della Maddalena was the betting underdog, but he surely didn’t fight like one at all. From the get-go, he proved that it was going to be a long night for Belal Muhammad inside the octagon. Both fighters spent most of their time on their feet striking each other in order to get a knockout finish.

Muhammad, known for his elite wrestling and control, threw out his old game plan and stuck to striking throughout the entire fight. This ultimately backfired as JDM showed incredible head movements and crisp striking to outpoint the reigning champion across five rounds. However, according to Islam Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, that won’t be the case with the dominant and disciplined Dagestani wrestler.

I just know Islam wants this one and its the challenge that Islam’s gonna be supreme over because I just know his skillset. Islam is  whole different animal than anyone Jack’s been involved with. If that fight does materialized we are gonna see a hell of a fight. You’re gonna see Islam perform at an absolute incredible level.

Makhachev’s way to beat Della Maddalena relies on relentless pressure and suffocating top control from start. Given his superior fight IQ, he’ll avoid prolonged striking exchanges by closing distance quickly, shooting for takedowns, and dragging the fight to the canvas efficiently.

Once grounded, Makhachev’s constant positional advancement and submission threats can nullify JDM’s power and striking rhythm. JDM showed improved grappling defense to defeat ‘Bully B’ at UFC 315. As such, it remains to be seen if the lightweight champion can overpower JDM the same way he does in his own division.
