The mid to late 2010s remains the peak of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Apart from the rise and chaos of Conor McGregor, this period saw the most heated rivalry of that time. McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov only fought once, but there was a time when both superstars were friends. The same cannot be said for Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, who hated each other from the beginning.

Fans could sense the hatred in the air when the light heavyweight duos collided in the 2010s. Since then, Cormier retired in 2020, and Jones still remain but limited UFC octagon appearance per year. However, the heated aspect of their rivalry never dies. Jones recently took shots at Cormier, suggesting he would easily defeat DC at heavyweight. His rival, Daniel Cormier, had the perfect answer to clap back at the current undisputed champion.

I’m retired. I’m done. I’m 46… How about you fight the dude that’s actually waiting to fight you – Tom Aspinall.

Tom Aspinall and the fans really tired of Jones waiting forever to book the heavyweight title unification bout. Daniel Cormier has maintained that Jones was not ducking Aspinall. At times, DC has also praised the heavyweight champion, with Jones also appreciating the noteworthy words. He chose to take a neutral side until Jones started again with the trash-talks.

The heavyweight division has only seen one title defense in the last three years. Jones holding up the division is also taking time away from Aspinall’s prime. This is why the fan base has turned on Jones, with Cormier also urging the undisputed champion to stop ducking the actual competition.

Not long after Jones trash-talked Cormier, the latter went on ESPN First Take for a segment alongside Chael Sonnen. It was a noteworthy appearance because DC didn’t hold back. He brought up the time when Jones refused to move up to the heavyweight division when DC was reigning as the champion.

In fact, ‘Bones’ once admitted that the heavyweight version of Cormier could defeat him. As such, the their two UFC encounters happened in the light heavyweight division, where Cormier had to cut a lot of weight. During his appearance on First Take, DC made sure reveal what Jones had said in the past.

When I was actively fighting, [Jon] said ‘I would not fight Daniel at heavyweight because it gives him an advantage’… He’s out of his mind.

It is unlikely that the Cormier vs. Jones rivalry ever results in another bout. However, much is expected about the Aspinall vs. Jones title unification bout. If it does not happen, one prominent name has asked the UFC to do something out of the ordinary.

Heavyweight who defeated Tom Aspinall asks for Jon Jones to be stripped

Not many fighters in the UFC can claim they defeated Tom Aspinall, with the exception of Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes. The American fighter has never shied away from saying what’s on his mind. Although most fighters show deep respect to Jon Jones, Blaydes will never hesitate to point out what’s right or wrong. As such, he openly called for the UFC to strip the undisputed champion.

Last year at UFC 304, Curtis Blaydes was unsuccessful in making it 2-0 against Tom Aspinall inside the octagon. He suffered a first-round TKO and lost his opportunity to win the interim title. Despite the loss, the American heavyweight has remained cordial with Aspinall, and has supported his claim for the undisputed title. This is why he posted on Instagram about the need to strip the UFC GOAT candidate.

There is probable cause for the UFC to strip Jones of the title. In the past, they stripped Conor McGregor for delaying things. However, the promotion has always shown leniency towards Jones regardless of what happens outside the octagon. As such, the call to strip Jones off the undisputed title is only going away in vain.
