The state of affairs regarding Ben Askren’s health has been a puzzling and worrisome one for the last few days. Last week, it came to be that Askren was in critical condition, and the ex-UFC fighter’s family later called for prayers amid the turmoil. Now, close friend and UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has provided further updates on it.
Team Roufusport MMA’s ‘Funky’ was part of a highly publicized trade-off with ONE FC and made his mark quick, as a mildly good draw with short banter snippets. Now, Ben Askren usually does his bit as an MMA analyst and part-time coach after his decorated combat sports career.
Much like the “Good Guy/Bad Guy” Show with ESPN Co-host Chael Sonnen, Daniel Cormier also has a show with Funky called “Funky and the Champ” on his YT Channel. “DC” recently gave some health updates after it came to be that Askren was battling a major pneumonia brought on by a staph infection.
Ben Askren, our good friend from ‘Funky and the Champ’, is having a hard time, …That night that we did the last episode of ‘Funky and the Champ’, Ben was complaining about some issues. He had some infections. He had a really tough time when he went to that convention in Vegas, he was stuck there for a while…I wanna report to you guys that he’s now back home in Wisconsin. He’s with his family, his beautiful wife, Amy.

Earlier this month, Askren’s wife, Amy Askren, posted for prayers online, asking all for well wishes. This was on Wednesday; however, Cormier understood that he had said something and set something in motion in the flow of things, and went with the emotions. But Ben Askren was, in fact, not home, but just a bit more stable than before.
Last night, Cormier went online to refute rumors that “Funky” had died from his illness. Regrettably, his selection of words resulted in certain media stir, reporting that Askren had returned to his place of residence, rather than his home state. Daniel Cormier later cleared that up:
He’s back in Wisconsin in a hospital. He isn’t home. Please keep praying for Ben. I should have been more clear.

While Ben’s wife has called for privacy in this tough time, Cormier did suggest the MMA clique send her messages of support. No matter what, it’s good news if the update includes the 40-year-old Askren still alive and fighting for his recovery.
Fellow peers wished for Ben Askren, with one of them causing quite a star about a possible passing
Doctors transferred ‘Funky’ to a hospital in his home state of Wisconsin after he initially fell ill during a trip to Las Vegas. In the last few days, Ben Askren’s wife has thanked fans for the overwhelming support from the MMA community. However, something happened later that rang the bells.

Ben Askren’s teammate from Roufusport MMA Academy, Maycee Barber, has considered him a mentor and close friend over the years. She has been going through some health setbacks of her own and had to pull out of her UFC Vegas 107 headliner spot versus Erin Blanchfield due to a backstage seizure.
Early morning, she posted IG stories and Threads about the fighter recovering well. However, the black and white montage and choice wordings of god ‘having his arms wrapped around him’ now confused UFC middleweight Caio Borralho.
The Brazil Fighting Nerd product sent out a very alarming “R.I.P.” tweet (now-defunct) for Ben Askren. While friend Daniel Cormier already corrected that Akren was ‘back in Wisconsin,’ Borralho later backtracked on it and explained his side.
No. Our friend Ben Askren has not passed away. But the situation is still dire. Praying for him. A hero in the wrestling community, a mma champion, and a one time boxer, which proved he would do anything, put himself in any situation to take care of his family and kids. Guys I didn’t announce anything. I didn’t said: Ben askren is dead. I just said rip cause that’s what I would wish for anyone of the community if this happens. It was just a sincere feeling. Thanks God I was wrong and now I wish a speedy recovery for him and still praying for him…

Borralho, who can speak English, apparently misunderstood Maycee Barber’s social media message honoring Ben Askren. He had erroneously presumed that from the post that Askren has succumbed to illness; unsure of it, he sent out a generic ‘rest in peace’ feeler. In any way, much to the relief of the #6-ranking middleweight and others, Askren is recovering.
