UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier has had quite an extended association with Jordan Burroughs in recent times. Burroughs is an Olympian wrestler who ‘DC’ ardently voices to be the best in the trade. Hence, it is no surprise that Cormier would come to his defense if need be, as the current situation warranted it.
Jordan Burroughs is a 2012 Olympian and 6-time world champ. DC once said Burroughs would dominate his friend, Islam Makhachev, a natural combat Sambo practitioner. Burroughs wrestled in the US Olympic Trials and lost to Jason Nolf in the finals of the 74 kg category. As such, he remains ineligible to compete in the 2024 Olympics. On his way out of the venue, a fan heckled Burroughs, which did not sit well with Cormier.
What a piece of trash this guy is. To yell go home to a guy who’s represented our country the right way for 13 years/ 7 world or Olympic titles is insane. This is why Arman punched that fan. People behave with no consequence. This dude possibly wrestled last match of his career and this is what you give him?Daniel Cormier via X (@dc_mma)
Daniel Cormier is the StrikeForce HWY Grand Prix Champ and former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champ. He also competed in the Olympics in 2004 and 2008. Hence, it’s no surprise he’d respect someone of a similar mettle. Moreover, the duo commentated for NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, March 21-23. Not winning the US Olympic wrestling trials might send Burroughs into retirement.
The chances of Burroughs waiting another four years to compete in the 2028 Olympic competition remain slim. Hence, Daniel Cormier lashed out at the disrespectful fanbase for their behavior as the time may have come to an end for the USA’s great wrestling talents. He even alludes to Arman Tsarukyan punching a fan at UFC 300 for similarly heckling and flipping him. All in all, the matter has worked up much sympathy in favor of Burroughs.
Jordan Burroughs Olympic Trials Results 2024 Season: Is retirement next for the decorated wrestler?
Jordan Burroughs was one of the clear betting favorites this weekend as he competed in the 74 kg bracket at the Team USA Olympic Team Trials. He is among the most decorated wrestlers in history. Despite giving his all to pro wrestling for over a dozen years, Burroughs could not make it to the endpoint in the weight class.
The 2024 USA Olympic Team Trials began on April 19 in State College, Pennsylvania, at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nebraska alum finished freshman year with a 16-13 record. He went on to have undefeated stats in his junior and senior years (in 2009, 35-0, and in 2011, 36-0). He is the 4th ever wrestler to win the NCAA championship and World Championship in the same year. Burroughs bagged the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Hence, he naturally holds quite a spot in the sphere of wrestling.
However, things did not go his way at the 2024 Wrestling trials. He entered his fourth Olympic Team Trials this weekend as the No. #1 seed in a packed 74-kilogram bracket. For the Quarterfinal, Jordan Burroughs scored over Alex Facundo. He also outpointed Mitchell Mesenbrink in the semis but lost to Jason Nolf at the Challenge Tournament Final. Even if Burroughs delays retirement, he will be almost 40 by the 2028 Olympics. As such, the Olympic journey of Jordan Burroughs has ended.
