Monza starlet Daniel Maldini created history while making his debut for Italy, becoming the third generation of the Maldini family to play for the national team. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder made his debut against Israel, in the UEFA Nations League.

Maldini made his debut for Italy, after having played for the Italy under-19s and under-20s. Having been recently called up to join the national team for the October international break, he replaced Giacomo Raspadori in the 74th minute of Italy’s 4-1 win over Israel. He made it through the AC Milan academy, before making 24 appearances for the senior team between 2019-2022. After spending two seasons on loan at Spezia and Empoli, the midfielder signed for Monza this summer.

The Nations League match was also a historic one, as Daniel became the third generation from his family to play for Italy. He is the son of legendary Milan defender Paolo Maldini, and the grandson of Cesare Maldini. Father Paolo was in the stands of the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy, watching his son make his debut. However, Daniel is a midfielder, unlike the other family members who played as defenders. The youngster has been defined as the missing piece in the Italian side, by head coach Luciano Spalletti.

Moreover, Daniel will have massive shoes to fill, with his father Paolo Maldini having won 26 major titles all throughout his career while also holding the record for the most Serie A appearances. His grandfather, Cesare, is also a four-time Serie A winner with AC Milan.

Apart from the Old Lady, reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan were interested in signing the midfielder this summer, before he joined Monza on a two-year deal. Inter chief Piero Ausilio scouted the youngster, but failed to complete his signature.
