Danielle Collins, who is known for her energy on court, went into her second match at the Madrid Open on a 14-match win streak. She won back-to-back titles at Miami and Charleston before arriving in Madrid to kick off her campaign on European clay. She faced a difficult challenge in Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic in her first match, scraping through with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(8) win.
In her second-round match against Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, Collins, who is the 13th seed, was visibly unhappy with the way things were going, after losing the first set 3-6. The crowd heckling at her only frustrated the American more and she had an angry interaction with a member in the stands, taking out some of this frustration.
At 3-6 1-1 40-40, during a crucial deuce point on Collins’ serve, someone in the audience was caught heckling her, and the world number 15 made sure she made her emotions felt.

After this outburst, she went on to continue with the game, successfully holding her serve and later taking the second set 6-4. The momentum carried her in the third set, which she won convincingly, taking the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Danielle Collins’ dream run in America after fans had counted her out
The American number three Danielle Collins was thought to have peaked in 2022, when she made it to the final of the Australian Open where she went down to Ashleigh Barty in her last-ever professional tennis match. Following that success came two years full of average results for Collins and many thought it was time she hung up her shoes.
Collins entered the WTA 1000 event in Miami as anything but the favourite, having gone down 3-6 0-6 to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells in the second round and also announcing that this will be her final season. However, the dark horse brought her best performance in the second tournament of the Sunshine Double, taking down four seeded players en route to the title which propelled her back into the top 20.
She followed this unbelievable result up with another title in the very next tournament that she played, the Charleston Open. Collins now has a chance to make it 3 in 3 at Madrid, if she continues to display her best tennis.
